Hi Everyone,
I had the privilege of sharing the stage with two other new authors this week, hosted by the Polo Fields Ladies Club. Each of us gave an overview of our work, the process, and the final product. It was an enjoyable evening as we answered audience questions and shared our stories of the writing process. One question that was asked was “Where do I begin?” This young woman in the audience has a remarkable experience she briefly shared with us. She wants to tell her story, but is reluctant to put herself out there, let alone know how to begin.
She is not alone in her trepidation to take on a task such as writing a book. Every single one of us who has gone through this process knows exactly how she feels. We don’t see ourselves initially as authors. But we are. We just have to believe it. Last night’s forum was inspirational. The support we received, and the support we as authors were able to give to a possible new author was rewarding. My advice to her was to begin writing. Be disciplined enough to make time every day to write. It might not always flow, there will be moments of writer’s block, but if your story is worth telling, the story will come. Push through your vulnerability and share your work with others. They will give you valuable feedback and it will help you lose some of the inhibitions about your writing. Be willing to openly listen to suggestions. You will learn from others’ input. Try not to see the need for revisions as a criticism. It’s a process, long and laborious at times. But working and reworking your manuscript will ultimately make it a better read.
Writing is exciting, but there are parts of the process that require your due diligence. First and foremost, do your homework. That means researching and finding answers. Search out experts. They can assist in lending credibility to your writing. It might be that your narrative is set in an unfamiliar geographical location. It might be that you are pursuing a character’s profession that is outside your wheelhouse. Whatever the case may be, do the legwork. And don’t just depend on the internet, interview folks who can assistant you, Real people are far more interesting anyway.
What about legal concerns? Seek legal advice if you have any concerns regarding your subject area or possible liability issues. Some of the very best work is controversial and thought provoking. However, it can be tricky when revealing information that could land the author in hot water. When it doubt, ask for assistance.
Get a good editor. That will require some research too. If you are self-publishing, you can be taken advantage of by many. They will charge you an arm and a leg for their assistance. Spend time looking for referrals. I was a total novice at this. I turned to Thumbtack and sought out an editor. I spoke with several individuals that were interested in working with me. After many phone conversations, emails, and research, I selected an agency that I felt was a good fit for me. At some point you take a leap of faith.
Marketing your book will be another important topic for discussion that I will address in my future blogs. The area of marketing was probably what surprised me the most upon completion of my novel. There’s much you will need to think about about in marketing your book. No matter how fantastic your book might be, if you can’t get folks to buy it and read it, then it’s not going anywhere. You will need a marketing plan, possibly a marketing agent. Social medias, book forums, emails, advertising, book clubs, and the creation of your own website are just a few strategies you will want to employ. Don’t be overwhelmed. You will learn. It is doable, but it’s work. For those of you who are beginning the path to becoming an author, I wish you the best of luck. Don’t give up on your dream. Just be prepared to put in the work needed to have a successful book.
